In this blog, I will continue to discuss what I have leant while taking lesson No. 4 of the Vectornator tutorial by Aysel Cebrailoglu.

Lesson 4 -Advanced colour work

In this lesson, I will be doing a master-apprentice excise on Aysel’s illustration which includes many composition elements such as mountains, clouds and rivers etc.

Aysel start off this lesson by giving some basic guidance on the compositions;

• Steelyard - a large mass is counterbalanced by a smaller mass further away from the centre
• Balanced scales - balancing positive element with negative space so that no element outpowers the other
• Compound curve - there is motion/rhythm in the design

Aysel stress that there are no rules when it comes to compositions, but this guide will help beginners find their feet when just getting started.

The master-apprentice excise that followed is an illustration with a compound curve composition. I used the sketch outline provided by Aysel as this excise is more about understanding how to use colour and shape techniques rather than sketching;

Using the pencil tool, I first filled in some leaves by the shore;
