While researching the Apollo 11 mission, I found some real footage of the moon's surface and the astronaut's moonwalk ( provided by NASA ) on Youtube. Amazed by what I saw, I wanted to add clips of this footage as Gifs to my IXD304 project to make the story more immersive.

So far, the only Gifs I have made are hand-drawn frame-by-frame animations created in Photoshop. However, now I have to find a way to make Gifs from actual video footage.

Through online research, I find out that you can make video footage Gifs through Canva through 4 simple steps:

  1. Create a new file in Canva; when creating the file, make sure you select the “ video” file option
  2. Upload the video you want ( but you need to download the video first)
  3. Edit the video to match your GIF length
  4. Download your GIF

The first video Gif I wanted to make was from the footage of the astronauts walking on the moon;

In order to upload the video to Canva, I first needed to download the video from YouTube. After looking on google, I found an online youtube video downloader website called y2mate. All you need to do is paste the link of the video that you want and select the video quality to download;

After uploading the downloaded video to canva, I played around with Canva’s video editor to crop the footage into a suitable time frame ( under 20 seconds). It was really hard to choose which part of the video i wanted to make into a Gif, as the actual video from NASA was 3 hours long. After some consideration, I decided to choose the moment the astronauts erected the American flag, as I think it is one of the most well know iconic moments;
